The Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville begins campaign for Racial Equity Fund

In support of Black History Month, The Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville began their campaign for the Racial Equity Fund.

Donations will help strategically address equity gaps based on race. Funds will be distributed to area nonprofits that are actively participating in racial equity. Since 2020, the fund has given out more than $185,000 to support more than two dozen local nonprofits.

To jump-start the campaign, the technology company Meta (formerly the Facebook company) has announced they will step up as one of the first investors in the Racial Equity Fund with a $20,000 donation.

Katie Comer, southeast regional community development manager for Meta, said, “Meta stands in support of the Black community and all those fighting for equality and justice every single day. The Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville is doing important work that directly benefits our community, and we are proud to invest in this work, and invite other companies and organizations in the Greater Huntsville region to join with us in supporting the Racial Equity Fund.â€

The Community Foundation views gifts to the Racial Equity Fund as investments into the community and its residents.

“When we tackle existing equity gaps, we expand opportunities to many people across our community,†said Melissa Thompson, CEO and president of the Community Foundation. “Only then can we experience the changes necessary to be a place where all residents can learn, work and further contribute to a healthy, thriving and prosperous place to call home.â€

Funds raised in February will be included in the current grant cycle, open to local nonprofits serving within the focus areas. Grant applications will be accepted until March 11.
