There are two main types of fog, radiation and advection.

Radiation fog is very simple and takes only two ingredients, clear skies and calm winds. This allows to cooling to reach all the way to the surface and for fog to grow throughout the early morning.

Once the sun rises, that fog will start to burn off.

But Radiation Fog isn't the kind we have been seeing in the Valley, as of late.

Our fog has been Advection Fog. This occurs when we have very cold air and a warm, moist air mass passes over it. This allows the moisture rich air to reach saturation very quickly and it allows for very dense fog thanks to the constant influx of the windy air mass providing continuing fuel.

This is especially common during the winter when a warm front moves through...sound familiar? We've been in that exact situation more than once in the last month.
