State and county leaders joined Madison County school officials to break ground for the Culinary Garden at the Madison County Schools Technical Center Monday.
Students enrolled in culinary studies will learn the process of farm to table agriculture by growing vegetables and herbs that will be used in the production of foods utilized in the classroom.
Funding for the garden was provided by the state along with the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District.
“It's a process of growing and this is going to be a great experience for these students to be able to be a part of this process first hand,†said Madison County Executive Mac McCutcheon. “Seeing it grow, being able to harvest it and then getting it ready for a meal to put on the table, so we’re very very excited about this.â€
Construction of the garden begins immediately with plans for expansion in the future.
