Pediatrician weighs in on helping your student when they return from winter break with the flu

Huntsville Hospital Women & Children's Center pediatrician shares helpful tips to keep your student healthy this flu season.

School is back in session this week for many across North Alabama!

The break has some students and teachers feeling under the weather.

One pediatrician with Huntsville Hospital's Women & Children Center, Dr. Kym Middleton, says the most important thing you can do is stop the spread.

"We've been seeing lots of RSV earlier this season, but now the past month or so, we have definitely had a jump in flu cases," said Middleton.

When your student heads to school this winter, Middleton says it's more important than ever to protect yourself and others.

"Be getting the flu vaccine," continued Middleton. "As well as making sure you are washing and sanitizing surfaces, washing hands with soap and water, hand-sanitizer, just to keep the germs at bay."

Middleton also says drinking water is a super simple way to help keep us healthy, and she says it's one we don't always remember.

"Whenever you get the flu, you get body aches and sometimes the body aches get significant enough that it can cause difficulty with walking or significant enough muscle issues that it can cause kidney issues," said Middleton. "So, to prevent that you need to be well-hydrated."

Middleton recommends bringing your student to the emergency room immediately if your student is struggling to breathe or their flu symptoms become severe.
